Tipping
Tipping is appreciated but not obligatory; many restaurants add a service charge, otherwise rounding up or leaving 10% is generous. Tip hotel porters and drivers a small amount in cash.

Etiquette and scams to know
โ Do
- Greet with 'As-salamu alaykum' and shake hands with the same gender; wait for a woman to extend her hand first
- Use your right hand for eating, greeting, and giving or receiving items
- Dress modestly, covering shoulders and knees; women should carry a scarf for mosques
- Accept offered coffee (kahwa) and dates as a gesture of Omani hospitality
- Ask permission before photographing people, especially women
- Remove your shoes before entering homes and mosques
โDon't
- Don't show public displays of affection, which are frowned upon and can be illegal
- Don't drink alcohol in public or appear intoxicated; consumption is restricted to licensed venues
- Don't eat, drink, or smoke in public during daylight hours in Ramadan
- Don't point the soles of your feet at people, and don't show or point with your left hand
โ ๏ธ Common scams to know
- Unmetered taxis quoting inflated fares; agree on the price before getting in, as most taxis have no meters
- Overpriced 'authentic' souvenirs and frankincense in souqs; bargain politely
- Tour operators promising experiences that don't match what's delivered; book through reputable agencies
- Inflated currency exchange rates at informal kiosks
