Cyprus
Κύπρος
On the Greek-Cypriot south you'll get by easily in English, but Bolt is the only real ride-hailing app — there's no Uber, and street taxis are pricier. Connectivity is strong island-wide on 4G/5G, and most cafes and tavernas take cards, though small village spots and kiosks still prefer cash. Grab an eSIM before you land since EU roaming doesn't cover the whole island and the Turkish-held north uses separate networks.

Etiquette and scams to know
✓ Do
- A relaxed 'siga siga' (slowly slowly) pace is the norm — don't rush waiters or shopkeepers.
- Accept an offered coffee or sweet; refusing hospitality outright can seem cold.
- Dress modestly when visiting monasteries like Kykkos — covered shoulders and knees.
✕Don't
- Don't photograph or wander near military zones, especially along the UN buffer 'Green Line' in Nicosia.
- Avoid lumping Greek and Turkish Cypriots together or taking sides on the island's division.
- Don't assume your rental insurance covers crossing into the north — many policies don't.
⚠️ Common scams to know
- Unmetered street taxis quoting inflated flat fares — agree the price first or use Bolt.
- Bars in Ayia Napa/tourist strips with 'hostesses' running up huge hidden drink tabs.
- Car-hire desks pushing unnecessary extra insurance on top of an already-covered booking.
