Etiquette and scams to know

✓ Do

  • Greet with a handshake; address people by surname with titles until invited to be informal
  • When toasting, traditionally avoid clinking beer glasses, a custom tied to the 1848 revolution
  • Say "Egészségedre" before drinking, making eye contact during the toast
  • Remove your shoes when entering a Hungarian home and bring a small gift like wine or flowers
  • Be punctual for social and business appointments
  • Note that the family name comes before the given name in Hungarian

✕Don't

  • Don't clink beer glasses when toasting, which is traditionally frowned upon
  • Don't confuse Hungarian with a Slavic language or assume cultural sameness with neighbors
  • Don't be loud or rowdy in thermal baths, which are places to relax
  • Don't photograph people, especially at baths, without asking permission

⚠️ Common scams to know

  • Bar and "konzumlány" scams where attractive women lure tourists to bars that present a hugely inflated bill
  • Unlicensed taxis overcharging from the airport and train stations; book a registered taxi or use an app
  • Currency-exchange booths with poor rates, hidden fees, or sleight-of-hand shortchanging
  • Restaurants near tourist areas with no clear prices that pad the bill or apply a high cover charge
