Serbia
Србија
Serbia keeps the dinar (RSD) and cash is still king outside Belgrade and Novi Sad, though cards and contactless are widely accepted in cities. Uber and Bolt ride-hailing do not operate here — the home-grown CarGo app and Yandex Go cover Belgrade, while elsewhere you call licensed taxis. Glovo handles food delivery and Viber is the messaging app locals actually use; mobile data is cheap and fast, so an eSIM is worth it.
🚖Rideshare & Taxi
All apps →Russia's super-app: rides, food, parcels, taxi. Replaces Uber there.
One of the few international ride-hailing apps that works in Belgrade for app-booked, metered rides.
💳Payments & Wallets
All apps →Multi-currency account with mid-market FX. Best for cross-border transfers.
Useful for getting good dinar exchange rates and withdrawing local cash, which you'll still need often.
🗺️Navigation & Maps
All apps →Works almost everywhere except mainland China. Offline maps are critical when roaming.
Solid for driving and walking; Belgrade bus/tram routing is decent — save an offline map of Serbia.
💬Translation
All apps →The universal default. Camera mode translates signs and menus instantly.
Crucial for Cyrillic signage and menus, though many Belgrade menus also use the Latin alphabet.
📱Messaging
All apps →Strong in Eastern Europe, Greece, and the Philippines.
Serbia's default messenger — apartments, tour operators, and friends coordinate over Viber, not WhatsApp.
🍱Food Delivery
All apps →Spanish food + parcel delivery, big in Portugal, Italy, Eastern Europe, and Africa.
The main food and grocery delivery app in Belgrade, Novi Sad, and Niš after it absorbed local Donesi.
✈️Travel Planning
All apps →Largest hotel inventory globally with free-cancellation default filter.
Best inventory for Belgrade apartments, Novi Sad, and Zlatibor mountain stays.
📶eSIM & Data
All apps →eSIMs for 200+ countries, instant install. Avoid roaming charges entirely.
Grab a Serbia or Balkans eSIM to avoid roaming; 4G coverage is strong in towns and along highways.

Etiquette and scams to know
✓ Do
- A firm handshake with eye contact is the standard greeting; toast by clinking glasses and making eye contact.
- Accept offered coffee or rakija — hospitality is taken seriously and refusing can seem cold.
✕Don't
- Bringing up the 1990s wars, Kosovo, or NATO bombing unless a local raises it first.
- Confusing Serbian with Croatian or assuming the regions are interchangeable.
⚠️ Common scams to know
- Unlicensed 'wild' taxis at Belgrade airport and Trg Republike charging inflated flat fares — book via app or use the official airport taxi desk.
- Card machines or ATMs offering conversion to your home currency — always pay in dinar (RSD).
