Etiquette and scams to know
โ Do
- A polite 'Moien' (hello) and 'Merci' fit anywhere; French works smoothly if you don't speak Luxembourgish.
- Punctuality is valued โ arrive on time for reservations and tours.
- Quiet, understated manners are the norm; loud public behaviour stands out.
โDon't
- Don't sit in 1st class on trains without a ticket โ only standard class is free; carry ID, as conductors may ask for it.
- Avoid assuming everything is open Sundays; many shops close and city centres are quiet.
- Don't expect to bargain โ fixed prices are standard, even at markets.
โ ๏ธ Common scams to know
- Very few โ it's one of Europe's safest, lowest-crime countries; petty pickpocketing only near the train station at busy times.
- Occasional overpriced 'tourist menu' spots near Place d'Armes โ check prices before sitting down.
- Unofficial 'guides' offering paid tours of free public sites like the casemates.
