Etiquette and scams to know
✓ Do
- Greet with a firm handshake and direct eye contact when meeting someone
- Say 'Dobrý den' (good day) when entering small shops, restaurants, or waiting rooms
- Remove your shoes when entering a Czech home unless told otherwise
- Wait for a toast and make eye contact when clinking glasses, saying 'Na zdraví'
- Keep your voice down on public transport and give up seats for the elderly
- Dress neatly for the theatre, opera, or upscale dining
✕Don't
- Do not clink beer and spirit glasses or cross arms when toasting, both considered bad luck
- Avoid confusing Czechs with Russians or referring to the country as part of Eastern Europe carelessly; many prefer 'Central Europe'
- Do not be loud, drunk, or rowdy in residential areas, which locals find disrespectful
- Avoid putting your feet on seats or furniture in public places
⚠️ Common scams to know
- Taxi drivers, especially those flagged on the street, overcharging tourists; book through an app or a reputable company instead
- Bars and clubs near Old Town Square or Wenceslas Square presenting inflated bills or charging for drinks you did not order
- Currency exchange booths advertising attractive rates but applying poor rates or high hidden fees; use ATMs or compare carefully
- Pickpockets working crowded trams, the Charles Bridge, and the metro in central Prague
